Should you be out at work?

The topic up for discussion was that thorny old one of whether to come out in the workplace. Our responses: “I’m not sure if I’m out at work, lovely to have a gay boy in the workplace, hide it for a while and then choose who you come out to, yes – out at work, came out when a fellow worker came out to her, not when working in a job affiliated with the church, don’t want to come out to anyone, the only gay girl in hundreds – until the Christmas party (which also proves the adage that a straight girl is only a bottle of champagne away from being a lesbian,) it’s a prerequisite to working at Foxtel, coming out to the family is more of the ‘worm grenade’, coming out is slightly like announcing cancer – people skirt gingerly round asking what you’re doing on the weekend.”
